Learning from Light: The Vision of I.M. Pei
USA, 2009, 84 and 57 min.
Director(s): Bo Landin & Sterling van Wagenen

Culture, Nature and Light: These elements provide the structure for the 1-hour documentary that explores the mind and heart of one of the world’s master architects, Chinese-American I.M. Pei, while chronicling his latest creation; the Museum of Islamic Art in Doha, Qatar. The Museum has already been dubbed “The Louvre of the Middle East” and after opening its doors to the public in November 2008 it has been baptized an architectural world wonder, exposing one of the world’s most magnificent collections of Islamic art.

July 15
Jean-Michel Basquiat: The Radiant Child
USA, 2010, 88 min.
Director: Tamra Davis

Director Tamra Davis pays homage to her friend in this definitive documentary but also delves into Basquiat as an iconoclast. His dense, bebop-influenced neoexpressionist work emerged while minimalist, conceptual art was the fad; as a successful black artist, he was constantly confronted by racism and misconceptions. Much can be gleaned from insider interviews and archival footage, but it is Basquiat's own words and work that powerfully convey the mystique and allure of both the artist and the man.

August 19
William Krisel, Architect
USA, 2010,
Director: Jake Gorst

This film explores William Krisel's life and work, including his roots in 1930s China, his ground-breaking designs for modern living, and interviews with scholars, his contemporaries and family. “I’m a firm believer that good modern design can make your life happier, more productive and more enjoyable,” says Krisel. During the 1950s, Krisel built thousands of mass-produced tract homes in Palm Springs—and throughout Southern California—and thus played a key role in establishing the desert modernism of the area. His major achievement was to elevate the expectations of the average buyer of prefabricated housing in the 1950s. By devising airy dwellings with massive windows opening onto the bright expanse of the surrounding landscape, Krisel proved that modest midcentury homes did not have to be “cracker boxes” of unimaginative and claustrophobic design.

September 16
Journeyman Architect: The Life & Work of Donald Wexler
USA, 2009, 66 min.
Director: Jake Gorst

During the 1950s and 60s, Donald Wexler pioneered commercial and residential construction using steel and prefabrication. He applied his groundbreaking techniques and unique style to projects for clients such as Dinah Shore, Frank Sinatra, the Alexander Construction Company and Walt Disney World Resort. Wexler’s designs for public buildings in the Coachella Valley of California, including the dramatic Palm Springs Airport, served as both soaring and practical models for other municipalities to emulate. Today Donald Wexler’s work is garnering new appreciation worldwide and providing inspirationfor a new generation of architects.
