2004 California Biennial
October 12, 2004 - January 30, 2005
The Orange Lounge will feature the works of four video, sound, and new-media artists from the 2004 California Biennial. From real-time computer-generated imagery to video installation, these projects by biennial artists highlight the range of new-media works being created by artists today.
![]() Using the sound tracks of previously existing films, newcasts, or other media sources, Kota Ezawa creates brief computer-generated animations that redirect our view of significant cultural events and icons. Rendered in a pairdown style of animation, events such as the reading of O.J. Simpson verdict or a climatic scene from the film Who's Afraid of Virginia Wolf take on uncanny qualities. Amy Franceschini is the founder of Futurefarmers, a new-media collective formed in 1995 that engages computer and Internet tools to create works that challenge and critique the impact technology can have on our lives. Projects by Futurefarmers may take the form of Internet-driven gallery installations, interactive computer workshops, video games, or Web sites. Part of a new generation of digital artists who are redefining how computers can be engaged in the creation of work, Shirley Shor makes real-time computer-generated video projections that alter our experience of architecture and time. Mungo Thompson mines the vernacular of American popular culture such as the desert scenery of Roadrunner cartoons, the audience applause on live recordings of rock concerts, or the design of car dealership balloons, Thomson's whimsical works call attention to the often-unnoticed details of contemporary life.
