Mary Finley Fry was a portrait painter, illustrator, muralist, lithographer, and etcher. Born in San Francisco, Finley was a graduate of UC Berkeley, where she studied painting under Hans Hofmann. Her style is a modernist blend of cubist and other influences, and she was the sole female member in the California Watercolor Society?s 1948 group portrait. Fry taught painting at Los Angeles City College (1935-42), UCLA (1950), Occidental College (1950-51), and Chouinard Art Institute. The artist had been a longtime resident of Studio City, CA at the time of her death.
