Sean Duffy was born in San Diego in 1966. Duffy earned his B.A. from the University of California, San Diego, in 1988 and his M.F.A. from the University of California, Irvine, in 1992.
Duffy uses mass-produced consumer goods as raw material for artwork that examines life in Southern California. Much of his work is concerned with the way these objects are entwined in social interaction (e.g. a turntable becomes an active participant in a party or office furniture merges with the recreational spirit of a redwood deck).
Duffy's exhibitions include shows at the Laguna Art Museum (2010), Miami Art Museum (2008), the Luckman Gallery, California State University, Los Angeles (2007), and he participated in the 2004 California Biennial at Orange County Museum of Art (now Cal Modern). Duffy's work is in the collections of The Miami Art Museum, Miami, Florida; Cal Modern, Newport Beach, California; The Nora Eccles Harrison Museum of Art, Utah State University, Texas; and the Museum of Contemporary Art San Diego, California. Duffy currently lives and works in Valencia, California.
