At Sarkisian & Sarkisian's core is a long-overdue, California survey of video artist Peter Sarkisian (born 1965, Glendale, CA), who studied at California Institute of the Arts and at the American Film Institute in Los Angeles. After a period working in the film industry, Sarkisian began experimenting with video sculpture in the mid 1990s, integrating video, film, and sculpture to challenge viewers' perception of reality and illusion. Employing textures and surfaces that combine sculptural and cinematic space, Sarkisian's installations peer below the surfaces of things, only to discover more intricate illusions beneath. This project expands upon a traveling exhibition organized in 2010 by the University of Wyoming Museum of Art, to include both earlier and more recent works not seen in prior venues. In addition, Cameron is presenting a selection of paintings made by the artist's father, Paul Sarkisian (b. 1928, Chicago), a respected artist in LA’s avant-garde scene of the 1960s and early 1970s with exhibitions at the Ferus Gallery and the Pasadena Art Museum (now the Norton Simon Museum of Art). With 22 video sculptures by Peter Sarkisian and nearly a dozen paintings by Paul Sarkisian, the exhibition hints at a comparison between the distinct approaches of two artists who happen to be father and son.
