For the last twenty years, marked by a layering of the art market, the art world has fractured internationally, expanding from small galleries to large art fairs. The role of traditional institutions came under question as art and design take up a new roll--politics. Although the culture wars were ignited in the eighties, the real fires roared through the nineties, as artists encountered controversy.
