Product Description

Joseph Kohnke breathes kinetic life into inanimate objects, while evoking a nostalgic, even childlike sense of wonder regarding mechanization. Kohnke's AOD14 limited edition takes the form of an elegant tabletop maquette of a refinery or processing plant, whose smokestacks are musical recorders. When the sculpture is switched on and the refinery chugs to life, the keys on the recorders are activated, and a series of musical sounds emerge from the smokestacks.

Kohnke, a native of Monterey, CA studied at San Jose State University, and earned an MFA in Art and Technology from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago. He has had solo exhibitions at Chicago Cultural Center; the International Museum of Surgical Science, Chicago; and Angles Gallery, Los Angeles. In Kohnke's own words, "I try to get the properties of everyday objects to ascend to the role of being a vehicle for a type of spiritual communication."
