Matt Lipps received his MFA from University of California, Irvine in 2004. He often uses publications such as Time, Life, and Horizons, along with museum catalogs and coffee table books as inspiration for photography and art. Lipps takes cut-out sculptural forms and creates a collaged diorama that essentially re-contextualizes the imagery to blur the distinction between figure and ground, and between illusion and reality.

In Windows, a brand-new edition produced on the occasion of the 2014 OCMA Art Auction, the images refer to a very popular MoMA photo exhibition, Mirrors and Windows, that was organized in 1978 by curator John Szarkowski, and the catalog for which provides the literal source material for Lipps’ visual mash-up. A subtext for the work can be gleaned from the fact that Szarkowski, who was chief photography curator at MoMA from 1962 to 1991, championed documentary and nature photography, which in turn dominated the field for decades, arguably at the expense of more experimental practices.

Lipps’ work is in the collection of Los Angeles County Museum of Art, Museum of Contemporary Art, Los Angeles, Saatchi Gallery, London and Hammer Museum, Los Angeles. In early 2011, Lipps was part of LA><Art’s billboard project in Los Angeles. Museum of Photographic Arts, San Diego included Lipps in their annual peer nominated Staking Claim: A California Invitational in summer 2013. The artist lives and works in San Francisco and Los Angeles.
