Product Description

Nathan Mabry's work confronts art history by appropriating historically significant artworks from the past, reworking them in clay, and altering their presentation so that a Peruvian head, for example, might rest atop a Donald Judd-like Minimalist steel box. For OCMA, Mabry has transformed Constantin Brancusi's watershed Portrait of Mademoiselle Pogany by making her eyes the receptacles for burning small cakes of incense (provided by the artist), and its base designed with secret drawers to store the incense.

Mabry was born in Durango, CO and holds an MFA from UCLA. In 2013 he had a solo exhibition at the Nasher Sculpture Center in Dallas, TX; and in 2014 at the SCAD Museum of Art in Savannah, GA. Mabry's work is represented by Cherry and Martin, Los Angeles; Sean Kelly, New York; and Praz-Delavalade, Paris.
