Product Description

Drawn from the Orange County Museum of Art’s 50-year history and rich holdings of modern and contemporary art, The Avant-Garde Collection traces multiple incarnations of the avant-garde with approximately 100 artworks that represent Cubism, Surrealism and Abstract Expressionism from the first half of the 20th century, and Pop, performance, installation art, new media, and appropriation from the second half, including painting, sculpture, assemblage, installation art, and video in myriad styles that all speak to the revolutionary dynamic of the avant-garde. An essay by exhibition co-curator Dan Cameron explores the many meaning of the term avant-garde and the challenge for artists today to produce innovative work that conceals the influence of generations past. A second essay by exhibition co-curator Fatima Manalili details the growth of OCMA’s avant-garde collection. The book included over 60 color plates.
